Background of the Study
Supplier development programs (SDPs) are strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities of suppliers to improve procurement efficiency, quality, and delivery performance. These programs often involve close collaboration with suppliers, sharing best practices, providing training, and investing in technology to strengthen their operations. Lafarge Africa, a major player in the Nigerian cement industry, operates across numerous states, including Taraba State, where it sources raw materials such as limestone, gypsum, and other minerals for its cement manufacturing process. Effective supplier development has the potential to streamline Lafarge’s procurement processes, reduce costs, and improve overall supply chain performance (Oluwatoyin & Amaka, 2023).
In Taraba State, Lafarge Africa’s procurement department is crucial for ensuring a consistent supply of raw materials and services needed for cement production. Supplier development programs can help enhance procurement efficiency by addressing challenges such as supplier quality issues, delays, and supply chain disruptions. Statement of the Problem
Although Lafarge Africa has implemented supplier development programs, challenges still persist in terms of procurement efficiency. These challenges include delays, inconsistent product quality, and limited supplier capacity to meet the company’s growing demand. The problem lies in assessing the effectiveness of these supplier development programs in improving procurement efficiency and identifying areas where further improvements can be made in the company’s procurement operations in Taraba State.
